Color Measurement
Why Measure Color?
The Color of many products acts as an important indicator
of product quality and processing performance. Specifically Color is
used in: Quality Control, Refining, Materials Sourcing, Inspection of
Incoming materials, Production Control, Inspection of final product.

Lovibond® PFX880/L
Automatic Colorimeters
The Lovibond® PFX880/L is an automatic version of the visual Colorimeter Models F/E, which is designed to meet a growing demand for consistent and objective Color data. It expresses Color in terms of the Red, Yellow, Blue and Neutral units that make up the Lovibond® RYBN Color scale. An integrated heater unit is available as a factory fitted option for maintaining samples such as fats and waxes in a liquid state.

Tintometer® Visual
Colorimeters Model F & Model F (BS684)
The Model F is a versatile visual Colorimeter for measuring the color of samples in terms of Lovibond® color units. The user simultaneously compares the Color of light that is transmitted through from the sample with that transmitted through a series of glass color filters in 3 primary colors – red, blue and yellow. The slides are adjusted until a visual color match is found for the light from the sample and the color is then expressed in Lovibond® RYBN color units. The Model F is available in two versions to meet the requirements of different applications and the standardizing bodies that specify the instrument in official test methods for color measurement.

Lovibond® AF710-3
The Lovibond® AF710-3 is a visual instrument approved by the American Oil Chemists Society (AOCS) for color grading of oils and fats according to AOCS Official Method Cc 13b-45, the Wesson Method. Color is determined by comparing light transmitted through a column of oil with that transmitted through a series of red and yellow glasses calibrated in accordance with the AOCS-Tintometer® Color Scale. The glasses are varied until a color match is found for the light passing through the oil and this color is then expressed in units of red and yellow.

Lovibond® 3000
Comparator Series
A series of single scale, 3-field instruments designed for visual color grading by direct comparison between the sample and Lovibond® colored glass filters housed in test discs. The sample and two consecutive glasses on the color scale are viewed simultaneously, making it easier to achieve the optimum color match. For rapid color grading within predetermined color limits, the glass standards can be set to the two limiting colors so that it is easy to check that the sample is within tolerance. The tungsten halogen light source is color corrected to CIE Standard Illuminant C (CIE Standard Illuminant B for the EBC instrument), giving constant lighting conditions for color grading, regardless of ambient lighting.

Lovibond® Comparator 2000 System
The Lovibond® Comparator 2000 System allows operators to visually match a sample against a suitable range of graded colored glass filters in Lovibond® test discs.
System components:
Comparator instrument to bring the sample and the glass filters together for Color matching.
Lighting unit (optional) to ensure constant viewing conditions for Color matching.
Color grading disc containing a series of glass filters, graded to give direct Color values.
Sample container of the required path length.

Lovibond® Pod Honey
Traditionally Pfund color units have been derived using subjective visual assessment in a Pfund Honey Colorimeter or against glass standards. This can lead to differences in reported values between users. A more objective approach is to use an instrumental method based on a photometric measurement.

Lovibond® Pod EBC
Automatic Grading of Beers & Malts
The EBC color scale, developed by the Institute of Brewing and the European Brewing Convention, is a recognized method for color grading of beers, malts and caramel solutions as well as similarly colored liquids. It has a range of 2 to 27 visual units, yellower pale worts and lagers at the low end of the scale and the redder color of dark worts, beers and caramels at the upper end of the scale.

Lovibond® Conformance
Filter Sets
Sets of glass filters, graded to the principal color scales included on Lovibond® instruments, are available for quick and simple calibration checks. The typical nominal values for each filter in the set are shown below; however, individual values may vary but these are always specified on the certificate of conformity supplied with the filters. If necessary, individual conformance filters can still be supplied under the category of ‘single filter (certificated)’.
